An incredible piece of typographic art, this image is from the title page of a 1910 survey atlas by G.M. Hopkins and Company for the City of Rochester, New York.

Maps of this era often had beautifully designed and elaborate title pages as can be seen here. This particular creation by the artists at G.M. Hopkins (and digitally remastered by RocSubway) is a wonderful combination of bold letter forms and wildly intricate line work – perfect for any modern Rochesterian to display proudly at home or in the office.

Between 1870 and 1940, G.M. Hopkins and Company produced over 175 atlases and real estate plat maps covering much of the east coast of the United States. These real estate or land ownership maps (also known as plat maps) not only depict property owners, but show lot and block numbers, dimensions, street widths, and other buildings and landmarks, including churches, cemeteries, mills, schools, roads, railroads, lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams.

G.M. Hopkins' map-making business was jointly founded in 1865 in Philadelphia, Pa., by the Hopkins brothers, G.M. and Henry. The company's fortunes declined during the Depression, and in 1943 it was purchased by the Franklin Survey Company of Philadelphia which still sells the company's maps as of 2015.

After the Erie Canal was rerouted south of downtown Rochester, the Rochester Industrial & Rapid Transit Railway (the “subway”) was built in its place as a link between the five different railroads and interurban trolley lines that served the Rochester area. As the industrial landscape of Rochester changed, and highways replaced the railroads, the Rochester subway gradually became a relic of a bygone era. In 1956 the subway was abandoned and much of its route was converted into Interstate 490 — built to connect Rochester with the New York State Thruway (I-90).
